Instructional Multi-Pitch Climbing

Reach greater heights by learning multi-pitch climbing in the Red River Gorge! While the predominant form of climbing in the Red River Gorge is single pitch, there are numerous multi-pitch routes to enjoy here as well. Multi-pitch routes scale taller and more varied cliff than in single pitch terrain. We recommend 12 years of age or older for these trips, but this can be somewhat flexible. Feel free to call for more info.

All trips are entirely tailored to your specific goals. Commonly taught topics include: gear placement, anchor building, belay station transitions, technical systems with an emphasis on efficiency, rope & climber management, and more.

This section details multi-pitch climbing in the Red River Gorge. Want to multi-pitch climb with us elsewhere? See Guided Climbing Outside of Red River Gorge! Our multi-pitch instructors have a wealth of knowledge and experience in climbing areas across the country. Read more about our professional and friendly instructors in Meet Our Instructors.

Multi-Pitch Climbing Trip Info

RESERVATIONS REQUIRED – Currently all reservations are made over the phone.

Reservations are required. We recommend making reservations AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. At our facility anything less than 2 weeks is considered last-minute. That said, we do our very best to accommodate last-minute reservations and last-minute reservation changes. We take reservations up to 1 year in advance. Please note that in general, WEEKENDS tend to fill up the quickest, meaning it’s advisable to make reservations MORE THAN 2 weeks in advance when possible.

Reservations require a 50% NON-REFUNDABLE deposit. If you decide to cancel, just let us know, and we can apply your deposit to a reschedule date up to a year from the original date reserved. If you decide to cancel and do NOT inform Southeast of your cancellation (i.e. no-show), your deposit is forfeited and will NOT be transferable to a reschedule date.

We understand plans change, and will work with you to update your reservation as things come up. However you MUST inform Southeast of ANY changes to your plans whether that is a cancellation or a change in date, arrival time, number of participants, medical conditions, etc. The day of your reservation, simply the remaining balance will be due based on the actual number of participants. Keep in mind that a change in your numbers will change the pricing per person, and that the deposit is still non-refundable.

We are open rain or shine! Again, you are welcome to cancel due to weather or any other reason; see above for our cancellation policies.

In the rare event that Southeast needs to cancel, we reserve the right to decide whether a refund or credit at a pro-rated amount will be issued. We are not responsible for cancellation fees from a change or cancellation in your flight plans, lodging, or any other accommodations.

Private: All trips are private – just you, anyone else you’ve reserved in your group, and your AMGA certified instructor!

Check-in: Trips meet at our main facility in the Red River Gorge: 1617 N KY 11 Campton, KY 41301. Please arrive 10 minutes before your reserved time. Default start times are 9 am for full days (up to 8 hours). There can be flexibility in some of the start times; please call for more info. After paying the remaining balance and turning in completed waivers, you will meet with your instructor and chat for a few minutes about your goals for the trip. Your instructor will also make sure you have all the proper equipment for the day.

Climbing Locations:

For multi-pitch climbing, you will leave the facility to head to another location in the Daniel Boone National Forest, Muir Valley Nature Preserve, Pendergrass-Murray Recreational Preserve, Bald Rock Recreational Preserve, or Miller Fork Recreational Preserve. Please note that for offsite locations, you will follow the instructor in your vehicle. The driving time of 5-25 minutes and the hiking time of 10-20 minutes is included in your trip time. For example, if you’re reserved for a full day, that’s 8 hours check-in to check-out at our office.

We provide all necessary climbing equipment, but we highly encourage you to bring your own if you have it. Food/Snacks/Water is NOT provided. Please bring a small day pack containing whatever you may need for the duration of your trip. You will need clothing that is appropriate for the weather and comfortable to climb in. You will need closed toed/closed heeled shoes, such as tennis shoes or hiking boots. We also recommend bringing sunscreen and bug spray.

Medical Conditions/History: During the reservation process, Southeast Mountain Guides must be informed of any allergies, medical conditions, or anything else that we would need to know. You will also need to update Southeast of any changes in medical conditions and inform your instructor(s) upon arrival. If there are any medical conditions please do not forget to bring any medications (including EpiPens/inhalers, etc.). This activity is NOT recommended for anyone that has a serious medical condition.
