2. Sky Bridge

Description: Sky Bridge is a well-known natural sandstone arch located in the Daniel Boone National Forest. The paved road to Sky Bridge offers several pull-offs with scenic overlooks, perfect for a quick sunset or sunrise view. The hike to the arch itself is short, easy, and partially paved. You can continue the trail to explore the base of the arch or create a loop just under a mile long.

  • Type: Loop
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Reward: A quick and accessible hike with a stunning natural arch and scenic overlook.

3. Chimney Top/ Half Moon

Description: Chimney Top is an iconic overlook often featured on postcards of Red River Gorge. The trail to Chimney Top is short, mostly paved, and very accessible. To reach the trailhead, you’ll drive a few miles on a gravel road that is usually well-maintained, though it may be closed in winter. Just a short drive from Chimney Top is the trailhead for Half Moon, another must-see spot. Note that Half Moon is not an official trail, and climbing to its top involves a brief but challenging scramble. Exercise extreme caution—a slip on this ridgeline could result in a serious fall.

  • Length: 0.5 miles for Chimney Top; 0.6 miles for Half Moon
  • Type: Out and back for both
  • Difficulty: Easy for Chimney Top; Moderate for Half Moon (with a 10-foot climb to the top)
  • Reward: From Chimney Top, you can view Half Moon, and vice versa. Half Moon also features a small arch, adding to its charm.

4. Auxier Ridge

Description: This is a very pleasant ridgeline hike in the Red River Gorge. Along the way you will wander through the forest but come to one of the most beautiful overlooks. Note that you will be driving a gravel road for a few miles. The Forest Service may close this gravel road in the Winter months.

  • Length: Just over 4 miles total
  • Type: Out and back (or loop if combined with Double Arch)
  • Difficulty: Moderately easy
  • Reward: This longer hike rewards you with a picturesque overlook perfect for a long rest and reflection. You can also visit Courthouse Rock. For those seeking a bigger challenge, combine this hike with the Double Arch Trail for a longer, looped route.

If you’ve been to the Red River Gorge or are a lover of the outdoors, you’ve probably experienced the violating feeling of spotting a tick on you after a day of climbing or hiking. During the warmer months , ticks are very common in the Red River Gorge and surrounding areas. Ticks are blood feeding parasites usually found in areas with tall grass, trees, and an abundance of wildlife (particularly deer). Ticks do not fly or jump, but they can drop from trees onto you. They often try to find their way to higher points on your body and can attach to humans and their pets.
